Surgery

Surgery represents a serious commitment on your part to improve your self-image and well-being. Dr. Sasaki or Dr. Hakimi will have an in-depth conversation with you about what each of your surgical procedures is intended to achieve, based upon your concerns, anatomical findings, and goals. A candid discussion about the technical aspects of each procedure should assure you of Dr. Sasaki’s and Dr. Hakimi’s thoroughness.

Your first step begins with the doctors’ consultation. They will listen to your primary and secondary areas of concern. Dr. Sasaki/Dr. Hakimi will then carry out a systematic and detailed analysis of those specific sites as well as adjacent structures that may influence your main areas of concern. Through photographs and physical findings, Dr. Sasaki/Dr. Hakimi will describe and clarify the findings. Although Dr. Sasaki/Dr. Hakimi will provide you with the advantages and limitations of each surgical option, they will select the optimal procedure that can best address your aesthetic concerns. When you have decided to proceed, the office manager will assist you with the final details to prepare you for your procedure either at our office or at a certified outpatient facility or hospital.

Preparing Your Surgery

Our office will provide you with specific instructions to facilitate your procedure. You will meet with our surgical nurse a few days before your surgery. She will answer your final questions, review your list of previous medications, order prescriptions for pain and antibiotic medications, and supply you with the surgical vitamin packages. The nurse will inform you of postoperative dressings or surgical drains and their care after surgery. She will advise you to stop smoking and alcohol intake at least three weeks before surgery and to avoid certain herbs and drugs that can reduce your ability to stop bleeding. If your surgery is to be performed under local anesthesia in our office, the nurse will instruct you on your arrival time and provide an estimated time when your procedure will be completed. She will discuss your options for transportation to your home. If your surgery is scheduled at an outpatient facility or hospital, our office will provide you information about how you check into the facility a day before surgery to complete your financial responsibilities, sign your operative consent, and obtain appropriate laboratory work.

Day of Surgery

If your procedure is to be done in our office, the nurse will instruct you to take one of the prescribed antibiotic capsules with a light meal and fluids about an hour prior to your arrival. You should wear light and comfortable clothing and leave your jewelry at home. You may wish to shower the morning of surgery. You will need to have someone drive you to and from our office for your safety and to put your mind at ease. If your procedure is scheduled in an outpatient facility or hospital, the facility will instruct you on your arrival time and place to facilitate a smooth processing for your procedure. If you are having general anesthesia, you should have nothing to eat or drink the night before surgery.

After Your Surgery

You should be up and about a few days after surgery but will need to refrain from strenuous activities for up to three to six weeks. The doctors will advise you on the status of your activity level as you progress in healing. You may return to your normal meals whenever you feel up to it. The doctors will inform you when to begin your daily showers after the first postoperative visit. Dr. Sasaki and Dr. Hakimi strongly suggests that someone should be available to assist you during your showering in the immediately post-operative period. A topical antibiotic may be applied twice daily to the sutures lines until their removal within ten days.

Your first postoperative visit is usually about three to five days after surgery. The doctors will assess your progress, remove selective sutures or drains, replace your dressings, and check your medication requirements. His nurse will provide LED light treatments to your surgical sites to reduce swelling and bruising and promote healing. (Please click on Light Emission Diode (LED) Therapy for more information). Your postoperative visits are an opportunity for you to ask the doctors any questions about your surgery and postoperative care. Your next visit is usually about ten days after surgery to remove all sutures. Thereafter, you will be seen at regular intervals for up to three months or longer, depending on your recovery and outcome. LED and ultrasound treatments are also part of your postoperative care to smooth out the incisions and reduce postoperative swellings.
