Upper Eyelid Surgery

Aging of the eyes is frequently noted before other signs of facial aging. Treatment of the upper eyelid could be a simple skin excision performed under local anesthetics or it might require fat removal, fat grafting, or muscle repair depending on the etiology of the problem. In older individuals or patients with history of trauma, the muscle responsible for eyelid elevation may require repair.

Lower Eyelid Surgery

“Puffiness” of the lower eyelids is another common reason for seeking plastic surgery. This could be due to excessive fat accumulation under the skin, or laxity of the ligaments and herniation of the fat as a result of aging which in turn stretches the overlying skin and muscle. Systemic illness and allergies are among other common etiologies.

Depending on the amount of skin and fat excess, lower eyelid surgery will include skin excision, fat excision or redraping. The goal of lower eyelid surgery is to create a smooth transition from lower lid to cheek and sometime patient requires fat grafting or fillers to the cheek area to achieve a youthful appearance. Based on patient’s age and facial anatomy the incision can be either behind the eyelid or right under the eyelashes. It heals very well and after a few weeks will not be noticeable.
