Calf Augmentation

Volume enhancement and shaping of the calf may be accomplished by the insertion of a solid semisoft silicone/gel implant (implant augmentation) or injections of your own fat (autologous augmentation). Dr. Sasaki will inform you about the advantages and disadvantages of each technique during your consultation at his Pasadena plastic surgery practice. He utilizes only anatomically shaped, FDA-approved implants for your safety and for providing an optimal aesthetic result. During your preoperative consultation, Dr. Sasaki will help you determine the size and shape of your calf implants based on your anatomy and goals.

Augmentation with Implants

The common approach for a calf augmentation using implants is a short horizontal incision in the crease line on the back of the knee. A pocket is created under the cover of the inner head of the major calf muscle (medial gastrocnemius) and extends from the midway point of the calf to the incision at the knee’s crease line. The selected implant is positioned in its pocket and stabilized therein by closing the muscle’s cover over it. In selected cases, a second pocket can be made over the outer head of the major calf muscle (lateral gastrocnemius) for insertion of another anatomically-shaped implant to achieve a fuller contoured appearance for a significantly skinny calf.

Fat Transfer

The optimal candidate for autologous fat grafting is slightly overweight but in good health. There must be adequate fat elsewhere in the abdomen, back and buttocks for harvesting (liposuction) and processing of fat for micrografting above and into each calf muscle. A compression garment is applied to decrease swelling, bruising and to enhance the healing process. Patients are encouraged to wear the garment between 4 to 6 weeks. Complications are uncommon but may include fat demise, asymmetry, bleeding, fluid collection, infection, and nerve irritation. Dr. Sasaki will discuss in detail your preoperative and postoperative management. His staff will prescribe pain and antibiotic medications on your preoperative visit.

Recovery & Results

After completion of surgery, a compression garment is applied to reduce swelling and bruising and to support the healing process. Patients are encouraged to wear this garment for at least 4 to 6 weeks and to refrain from strenuous activities. Although complications are uncommon, the doctor will discuss possible risks that include implant exposure, infection, displacement, nerve irritations, asymmetries, and collections of blood (hematoma) and fluids (seroma). Dr. Sasaki’s staff will prescribe pain and antibiotic medications at your preoperative visit.
