Skin Tightening

Author: Dr. Gordon Sasaki

Women and men from the Los Angeles area, Glendale, and Arcadia looking for a minimally invasive alternative to a facelift at our Pasadena practice can get excellent results from the Silhouette InstaLift™, which uses absorbable sutures and doesn’t require incisions. Dr. Gordon H. Sasaki’s extensive experience with similar suture systems led to our Surgical Center becoming a training site for the Silhouette InstaLift in 2017.

InstaLift System Benefits

For patients concerned about the early signs of aging, but who don’t want a surgical facelift, the FDA-approved InstaLift elevates the mid-face and can be used off-label to lift sagging jowls and tighten loose neck skin. The material used to make the absorbable sutures includes poly-L lactic acid (PLLA) and glycolic acid, both of which naturally occur in the body. PLLA is the ingredient used in Sculptra® Aesthetic, an injectable treatment that promotes the production of new collagen. Glycolic acid is used in skin care products to help exfoliate and rejuvenate the skin. The InstaLift procedure not only elevates underlying tissue but helps restore volume without the need for fillers.

The Dr. Sasaki Difference

Dr. Sasaki is recognized as one of the leading innovators in the field of facial plastic surgery. He introduced a permanent suture system in 1995, which was used by facial plastic surgeons until 2012 when more absorbable systems became available. Because of his skill and experience, he was asked to help train other surgeons in the InstaLift technique at Sasaki Advanced Aesthetic Medical Center in Pasadena. The facelift alternative was introduced in 2015 and is a popular choice for people who want less downtime and a lower cost than what traditional facelift surgery involves.

The InstaLift Procedure

An InstaLift procedure doesn’t involve incisions and usually takes about 1 hour, which is why it’s sometimes referred to as a “lunchtime facelift.” During the procedure, Dr. Sasaki places 3 sutures and integrated bi-directional cones on each side of the face to lift the cheek fat pad, jowls, and submandibular tissues. Patients see the results almost immediately with limited downtime, swelling, or pain.

The results can last up to 18 months as the body gradually absorbs the sutures—a process which stimulates collagen production. After 18 months, or even sooner, Dr. Sasaki can insert additional sutures if a patient wants to shore up sagging tissue. When the degree of tissue sagging or loss of volume becomes too significant, however, patients may decide on an open technique in which additional sutures can be added for more aesthetic effects.

In fact, Dr. Sasaki may recommend incorporating the InstaLift system during an open facelift procedure to elevate the tissues and combine fat transfer using the patient’s own fat to enhance facial volume.
